In the realm of television, HBO has always been a dependable outlet for top-tier content. That’s something viewers were reminded of this year thanks to The Young Pope, Game of Thrones season 6 and of course, Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Western mash-up that’s gearing up for a “crazy” finale this coming Sunday.
Looking further afield, though, 2017 will yield a whole host of exciting HBO dramas, from the sixth and indeed final season of Girls to Big Little Lies, Jean-Marc Vallee’s star-studded series that has today unveiled our first trailer – and we do mean star-studded. Anchored by Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon’s catty leads, Big Little Lies has made room in its ranks for Divergent star Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, James Tupper and Zoë Kravitz which, when pulled together, is an enviable lineup of talent.
Lifting inspiration from Liane Moriarty’s page-turner, up above we’re introduced to a community of overly nice moms “whose apparently perfect lives unravel to the point of murder,” according to HBO’s press release. Told across seven episodes, even from the teaser trailer alone, Big Little Lies is crammed full of haunting shots that depict characters on the verge of a mental breakdown.
Suburban Australia has never looked so beautiful, even if the serene vistas are juxtaposed with a story of three women pulled into a murder investigation. There are elements of black comedy peppered across the limited series, and if screenwriter David E. Kelley strikes the right balance, HBO’s adaptation could well become one of 2017’s first must-watch shows.
Big Little Lies premieres February 19, 2017 on HBO. Will you be tuning in?
