Everyone rise for the Queen, because Black Butler is back. After almost a decade without seeing Sebastian and Ciel on our screens, the story about the mysterious crew surrounding the powerful Phantomhive family will finally return, even if fans had almost lost faith in the continuation of the anime.
Created by Yana Toboso in 2006, the Black Butler manga finally gained an animated adaptation two years later, running for three seasons after its debut date. Up until 2014, fans were still able to indulge in this contentious and yet addicting universe, but it all came to a halt after the lackluster reception of the third season. It also did not help that the anime got a Japanese live-action adaptation that needless to say, did not impress audiences.
Nonetheless, there was some good on the horizon, and now fans can rest a bit more easily knowing the dark alleys in London would be welcoming a certain demon butler and powerful kid once more. On that note, here’s all the information that is known about the upcoming anime thus far.
When is ‘Black Butler’ coming back?
The news of a Black Butler revival arrived during the Anime Expo 2023, where the trailer for the return of the anime was unveiled. The revival announcement was also accompanied by the reveal that the new Black Butler season would now be coming to Crunchyroll and that it would most likely be a continuation of the previous anime, instead of being an entirely new reboot. What’s more, both of the Japanese actors from its original installment will reprise their roles as Sebastian and Ciel.
Although no date of release has yet been revealed, the announcement did provide a release window for fans, and you can expect Black Butler‘s new season to reach the platform in 2024. The series will be directed by Kenjiro Okada for the studio CloverWorks, written by Hiroyuki Yoshino, and with the character design created by Yumi Shimizu.
As previously mentioned, the story will continue on from where the third season ended, showcasing the adventures in which we will see Sebastian and Ciel prowl the darkest alleys of London, hoping to jump on the mission of snuffing out those who would do evil.
For now, all we can do is wait for the anime to be completed and finally added to Crunchyroll’s platform. In the meantime, the original anime can still be revisited on Hulu and Netflix, and the Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic movie can be found on Crunchyroll.
