Fleeting teasers and waves upon waves of bloody brilliant casting announcements have ensured excitement for Starz’s small-screen rendition of American Gods kept ticking over, and now, shortly after unveiling the godly first poster, SDCC brings forth the first true teaser of Neil Gaiman’s beloved novel in motion.
It’s the adaptation that many believed would never happen, and after years of seemingly constant back and forth, fans of Gaiman’s work will soon be able to revel in Starz’s ungodly feud. Introducing us to Ricky Whittle’s Shadow Moon, the teaser above is as much about outlining the supernatural premise as it as about familiarizing viewers with the gods among us.
Steering onto TV by way of Bryan Fuller and Michel Green, American Gods will bring together an all-star cast that includes X-Files stalwart Gillian Anderson, Emily Browning, Yetide Badaki, Cloris Leachman, Ian McShane, Pablo Schreiber, Peter Stormare, Crispin Glover and Orlando Jones.
“American Gods has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.”
You are what you worship, and in 2017, Starz’s godly feud will descend on the small-screen. But will you be tuning in to American Gods?
