It’s been over a year and the viewers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the regal, honorable, and prestigious Bridgertons with their swanky carriages, exquisite gowns, sprawling mansions, intriguing scandals, and complicated love stories.
Bridgerton’s immense popularity and phenomenal reception by the audience is not surprising, as the show expertly weaves together elements of fantasy with historical and social realities, making it a fun viewing experience.
Based on the book series of the same name by Julia Quinn, the series portrays the existing social and gender hierarchies in England’s 19th-century Regency era, following the protagonists as they navigate numerous obstructions and taboos towards acquiring love.
Season one introduced the viewers to the passionate romance between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Duke Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), while season two steered the focus toward Daphne’s elder brother, Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), and his burgeoning romance with Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley).
With a new year emerge new hopes and in this matter, one can’t blame the fans for wishing to know more about their favorite show — especially when it’s going to air, and what the story will revolve around. As of now, we know that the filming is over and even though the official release date hasn’t been announced yet, it is believed to be sometime in the second half of the year.
‘Bridgerton’ season three: release window, plot, and cast
An announcement regarding the upcoming installment was made a long while back. On April 13, 2021, Netflix confirmed the show’s third and fourth seasons and penned it down in the typical Lady Whistledown fashion:
“Esteemed members of the Ton,
It seems we have a rather special announcement. Bridgerton shall return for seasons three and four. This author shall have to purchase more ink…
Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown”
Even the Executive Producer, Shonda Rhimes, told Elle about the imminent arrival of the two seasons:
“‘From the first time I read Julia Quinn’s delicious Bridgerton series, I knew these were stories that would captivate a viewing audience,’ Rhimes said. ‘But the evolution of this adaptation would not be a success without the many significant contributions of the entire Shondaland team. This two-season pickup is a strong vote of confidence in our work… Betsy [Beers[ and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue bringing the world of Bridgerton to a worldwide audience.’”
Of course, the curiosity hasn’t ended with the assurance of a season three, as fans are enthusiastic about what it would contain. After staying faithful to Quinn’s first two books, The Duke and I and The Viscount Who Loved Me, the new entrant will see a slight detour as it is aimed at addressing the romance between Penelope Featherington and one of the younger titular siblings, Colin Bridgerton.
A focus on Penelope at this point would mark an interesting turn of events, especially after her secret as Lady Whistledown was discovered by her best friend Eloise, leading to a heated confrontation between the duo.
As the anonymous gossip queen, Lady Whistledown is known for her scathing, witty remarks against every member, it will be fun to see what she has to say about herself. At this moment, no information has been revealed about season three apart from the summary which is:
“Penelope Featherington has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly.”
The cast from the previous seasons would return to their respective roles. These include Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Weatherington, Luke Newton as Colin Bridgerton, Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton, Jonathan Bailey as Anthony, and Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte. Undoubtedly, we can aspect Julie Andrews to once again lend her voice as Lady Whistledown.
Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing Daphne, the Duchess of Hastings, which was confirmed by Phoebe Dynevor. On being asked whether she would return, Dynevor told Screenrant, “Sadly not in season three. Potentially in the future. But in season three, I’m just excited to watch as a viewer.”
With the rising excitement of Bridgerton season three advancing closer, the fans will only have to wait for a few months.
