(Season Two, Episode 11) – Cheering Jesse up, Goodman style
One of their street dealers is shot and killed, and the rest of their team leave them. With no ideas as to how to continue their business, Walt and Jesse head to Saul’s office for a meeting. As they begin to explain their “setback” Walt and Jesse start to bicker, and Saul – relaxing in his chair with his ‘World’s Greatest Lawyer’ mug – tries to cut to the chase.
“Guys, guys. Hey! Who do I look like, Maury Povich? I’m not your marriage counsellor. Now, you’re professionals. Act like it. Setback. Go.”
Once he’s heard the news, he asks some questions and accentuates the positive, then turns to Jesse and lays it out for him.
“As to your dead guy. Occupational hazard. Drug dealer getting shot? I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it’s been known to happen.”
Hearing that they have a large amount of ‘inventory’ remaining, though they no longer have a way to distribute their product, Saul is heartened and takes an optimistic view, with a firm edge.
“Let’s start with some tough love. You ready for this? You two suck at peddling meth. Period. So, give up on trying to do it all yourselves. Hell, I’m amazed you got this far.”
He suggests setting them up with a real businessman, who has been in the industry for 20 years without getting caught because, in true Saul Goodman fashion, he “knows a guy, who knows a guy.” And so, the Walt/Jesse partnership is set on the next leg of its long, dark journey.
