Charlie Cox is a busy man, with his hands currently full with an eight-month shoot in New York for Daredevil: Born Again. As a result, he has yet to find the time to watch his own episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.
During an ICCCon panel in Nashville over the weekend, Cox talked about his process as he approached a show that’s so different in tone from what he was used to in Netflix’s Daredevil and The Defenders. Accompanied by his onscreen nemesis Vincent D’Onofrio, Cox commented that he’s “actually also haven’t seen that episode,” referring to the eighth installment of the Tatiana Maslany-led series.
The only time Cox got to watch his scenes as Matt Murdock was while recording additional audio in the studio. “I’ve seen the bits from when we do the ADR, which is the voiceover stuff and it seems fun,” the actor said.
Cox’s portrayal of the beloved vigilante – or rather the specific writing for the character in those two episodes – has been a big point of contention among the MCU faithful. Some weren’t big on the comedic turn for Murdock, who is usually very self-serious in his own show. As Cox points out, however, that isn’t always the case in the comics, and he enjoyed reimagining the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in a less menacing light.
“When She-Hulk came along and I read those scripts, I felt like this is a really good opportunity to try my hand at that tone with this character and see if I can remain true to the character but also find a side of him that is represented in the comics that would be appropriate for that show. It was a really cool experiment to see if you could take that character and without losing anything – losing what people love about that character, what I love about that character – and still see him in different places. It’s also true to life. There are times in your life when you find it very difficult to find a sense of humor because you’re struggling or because life is hard, and there’s times when life’s running smoothly and it’s sunglasses and roses.”
Don’t be like Charlie Cox. Watch She-Hulk now on Disney Plus, while you wait for Matt’s return in Daredevil: Born Again, coming in 2024.
