Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered to huge ratings back in 2013, but those soon began to plummet when it became apparent that the series wasn’t what fans of The Avengers had been hoping for. That aside though and the first half of season one was very hit and miss, and it wasn’t until the show tied into the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and introduced Hydra that it really became must-watch TV.
Since then, we’ve seen crossovers of varying importance with the movies, but nothing quite as significant as that. There were certainly some big nods to the likes of Thor: The Dark World and Avengers: Age of Ultron though, and with the Inhumans playing a key role in season three, it’s become apparent that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a show still very much rooted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, with Captain America: Civil War around the corner, how exactly will The Accords play out for Agent Coulson and the newly formed Secret Warriors?
Talking at the New York Comic-Con, Clark Gregg had this to say about the possibility of some sort of connection between the two:
“Civil War has always been about the registration of superheroes and people with powers. I suspect what we’re doing will connect with that in some way. What I like about what Marvel has done with our show is we explore a broader part of what’s going on in that stuff. Sometimes it connects in a big way. For instance with Winter Soldier, you’re seeing more hours of that dynamic, of suddenly realizing seeing people you’ve worked your whole life for are part of this evil organization trying to kill you, that personal betrayal we get to play out for hours more.”
It’s hard to imagine Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. not feeling the impact of the war between Captain America and Iron Man, but how significant it will actually be is hard to say at this stage (especially with that movie being released near the end of the show’s third season).
Regardless, we’ll no doubt get some sort of build up to the events of the first Phase 3 movie in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this year, so you may want to start keeping your eyes peeled for Easter Eggs over the next few months.
