Clark Gregg Thinks Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Will End After Season 7

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 hasn't even aired yet, but ABC already renewed the Marvel TV series for a seventh season many months back. Fans thought they could rest easy about the show's future, then, but now it seems that the early renewal might have also been a confirmation that the MCU spinoff only has two years left in its lifespan.

While speaking to Den of Geek while promoting Captain Marvel – which marks his grand return to the big screen as Phil Coulson – Clark Gregg seemed to suggest that S.H.I.E.L.D. only has two seasons left on its docket. According to the star’s intel, it’s seasons 6 and 7 and that’s it.

“That’s the word I’ve heard. The announcement I read was, two more seasons, six and seven.”

If Gregg’s on the money here, fans of the cult favorite will likely have mixed emotions. Sure, it’s sad that it’s ending but, honestly, seven seasons is a gift after S.H.I.E.L.D. was repeatedly on the bubble of cancellation every year. What’s more, the confirmed seventh season ensures that the show isn’t being axed out of the blue and will be able to wrap things up in ways that’ll hopefully satisfy the audience.

Gregg’s estimate also makes sense if you look at the wider context of the MCU. With the advent of Disney Plus and the death of the Defenders-verse over on Netflix, it’s looking increasingly likely that Marvel Studios is taking control of the MCU’s small-screen outings. If that’s the case, then, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has to come to a close. However, that doesn’t mean that we won’t see the cast again.

Coulson’s making a cinematic comeback in CM, so maybe he’ll get a new show on Disney Plus. Alternatively, why not give Chloe Bennet’s Quake her own vehicle? Marvel’s planning so much for the Mouse House’s streaming service right now that theoretically, anything could happen, right?
