Morgan Jones is bound for AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead, so why not Shane Walsh, too?
That very question was posed to Jon Bernthal during a recent interview with the Daily Express (via ComicBook.com), in which the former Walking Dead star entertained the possibility of resurrecting Shane. And, well, we hope we haven’t got your hopes up.
Because although Bernthal is immensely proud of his time on AMC’s flagship zombie drama, “Shane died in that field,” which is to say that there’s basically zero chance of Fear The Walking Dead welcoming Jon Bernthal into its midst. Not now, and perhaps not ever, as the actor tells the Daily Express:
I loved Shane and whilst I’m super grateful I got to do that, he was a character that had a beginning, middle and end, and I got a whole rounded opportunity. I feel like we’ve seen all we need to see of Shane. If we got to see him backwards – that would be interesting. But Shane died in that field. Doing the show and being killed off the show are two of the best things that have happened in my career.
Shane Walsh is a goner, then. And let’s face it, Bernthal’s career continues to go from strength to strength – something that would not have been possible had he hung around The Walking Dead much longer. From The Wolf of Wall Street to last year’s music-fuelled Baby Driver, the gravelly-voiced actor has enjoyed great success across screens big and small. And then, there’s The Punisher.
Building on his performance in Daredevil season 2, Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle was unleashed upon Netflix late last year, when the hardboiled marine began scouring New York in order to expose a city-wide conspiracy. It wasn’t without its faults, of course, but Marvel and Netflix have still given the go-ahead for a second season, which will presumably be with us after new instalments of Jessica Jones and her fellow Defenders.
The Walking Dead, meanwhile, is booked in for a mid-season premiere on February 25th, before Fear The Walking Dead returns later in 2018 – sans Shane Walsh.
