Fans of Netflix’s The Crown have already waited a royally long time for the third season of the acclaimed period drama, but it sounds like they’re going to have to be patient a while longer as the streaming service has suggested it’s not going to arrive until the second half of this year.

Netflix revealed to Gold Derby that The Crown would not be considered for the 2019 Emmy ceremony as season 3 won’t be released in time. The deadline for the awards competition is May 31st, which tells us not to expect the show to return any earlier than that. GD’s report suggests that the lengthy production schedule for season 3 is what’s causing the delay, with the season possibly still filming into May and June.

The Crown season 1 arrived to universal acclaim in November 2016 before the equally well-received second run landed just over a year later in December 2017. As such, anticipation is high for the next outing, but there’s good reason for the delay, as the whole cast has been recast from top to bottom.

As the series moves into Queen Elizabeth II’s middle years, Claire Foy has been replaced by recent Oscar winner Olivia Colman. Likewise, Matt Smith, Vanessa Kirby and Matthew Goode’s roles will be filled by Tobias Menzies, Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Daniels as Prince Phillip, Princess Margaret and Lord Snowden, respectively.

Given the winter release date of the past two seasons and the long production process on this one, it doesn’t seem out of the question that season 3 will arrive on Netflix towards the end of 2019. That’ll mean a couple years wait for fans, but at least season 4 should materialize quicker. After all, casting is already underway, with Gillian Anderson already signed up to star as Margaret Thatcher.

As always, we’ll keep you updated when more on The Crown season 3 comes to light, so be sure to stay tuned.
