The CW’s Considering A Gossip Girl Reboot

Gossip Girl was a huge hit for The CW, being a hit practically from its first episode in 2007 and maintaining an audience throughout its six seasons. That's hardly surprising: it had a killer premise and a fantastic cast: who could resist peeking into the privileged lives of wealthy Manhattan teenagers and seeing how secretly miserable they all were? Boasting Blake Lively, Penn Badgley and voiceover work by Kristen Bell was the cherry on top of the cake.

Gossip Girl was a huge hit for The CW, being a success practically from its first episode in 2007 and maintaining an audience throughout six seasons. That’s hardly surprising, though, as it had a killer premise and a fantastic cast. I mean, who could resist peeking into the privileged lives of wealthy Manhattan teenagers and seeing how secretly miserable they all were?

But now, seven years after the series finale, it looks like the network is considering rebooting the show for a new audience. That’s according to The CW President Mark Pedowitz, who brought up the subject on Thursday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour and said the following about it:

“There’s a discussion, but I don’t know if we’re there yet. I don’t know what it would be. A lot is up to Warner Bros. and [exec producers] Josh [Schwartz] and Steph[anie Savage], ’cause you don’t want to do anything without them.”

The CW seems to have a mild case of reboot fever of late, with Charmed and Roswell both getting the reboot treatment. And while each of those have proven to be successful, it still begs the question: is it a little too soon to be going back to the same premise when Gossip Girl finished only (relatively) recently?

Well, in an uncharitable light, you could say that the network has a creativity problem, relying on tried and tested hits rather than trying new things. Then again, the show was always aimed at a youngish audience, and in the twelve years since it’s premiered, a whole new potential audience has grown up that could be enticed by its charms.

Then again, if it does happen, be prepared for endless speculative articles about who the titular and mysterious “Gossip girl” is this time around.
