With the cancellations of both Iron Fist and Luke Cage, Marvel fans are worrying for the future of the other MCU shows on Netflix. While we know we’ve at least got one more season apiece from Jessica Jones and The Punisher, with those already filmed and in the can, it’s all up in the air for Daredevil, which just delivered its third season. We’d imagine, then, that its renewal will all depend on how well the new run did with viewers.
If that’s the case, though, then we have some bad news. According to newly-uncovered data, Daredevil season 3 lost over 50% of its audience in its first week compared to those who watched season 2 across its first 7 days on the streaming site. ScreenRant has partnered up with Jumpshot, an analytics company with an “anonymized global panel tracks five billion actions a day across 100 million devices to deliver insights into online consumer behavior,” to reveal these findings. According to them, 57% of fans never bothered to show up for ol’ Hornhead’s third season.
Now, it’s worth pointing out that ScreenRant says Daredevil continues to outperform both Luke Cage and Iron Fist despite this steep decline in viewership, as the series has always been the most popular of the five Marvel/Netflix shows. However, Jumpshot previously revealed how LC and IF had lost around 60% of their viewers in their recent second seasons, which is surely at least a contributing factor to why they were cancelled.
On the other side of things, Daredevil season 3 was critically acclaimed and those of us who did watch it are calling it one of the best Marvel/Netflix outings yet. Maybe even the single greatest. If the company is having doubts about its future, maybe they’ll be buoyed by its overwhelmingly positive reception and renew it based on that?
In the meantime, Matt Murdock might be the Man Without Fear, but right now we’re pretty fearful about Daredevil‘s future.
