You could say with some degree of truth that certain fans are perhaps a little too invested in ever single piece of minutiae revolving around a certain project or franchise, with James Gunn’s Creature Commandos opening the door to the worst kind of nitpickers based on a David Harbour performance a lot of people may have forgotten even happened.
For those who don’t recall – which is fair enough because it wasn’t exactly memorable – the Stranger Things star played Dexter Tolliver in Suicide Squad, sharing a scene with Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. That latter piece of information is important, because she’s technically part of official canon in the James Gunn era after it was confirmed Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters would reward her with a solo series.
Harbour has of course boarded Creature Commandos as the voice of Frankenstein, and with Gunn confirming that several members of the ensemble will also be reprising their roles in live-action, an innocuous question was posed on Twitter.
As expected, though, the comments devolved into all-out tribalism as debate erupted over whether or not Suicide Squad was canon because Davis’ Waller was in it, Harbour’s potential appearance as Frankenstein in a live-action movie or TV show blows a hole in continuity, deep dive theories about how Tolliver eventually becomes the hulking brute of Creature Commandos, and on and on it goes.
Most likely, the explanation is simple; The Flash resets the timeline, Waller still looks and acts like Viola Davis, and we can all forget Dexter Tolliver even existed and looked an awful lot like David Harbour. Unfortunately, it’s never that simple with DC.
