Earlier today, the BBC sent Doctor Who fans into a frenzy when they Tweeted out a cryptic video teasing the announcement of the next Doctor. They didn’t reveal the name of the actor/actress set to play the role, of course, but rather told us that the identity of the individual will be made public this weekend – on July 16th, to be exact.
For months now, rumor after rumor has popped up, naming various people who might be taking over for Peter Capaldi in the iconic part. To date, nothing’s been confirmed, but now, with the official announcement looming, let’s look at who the current favorites are.
According to betting website Odd Checker, Kris Marshall appears to be the number 1 choice, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who’s already denied being involved in the show) coming in at second place. Behind them sit Black Mirror‘s Jodie Whitaker and Friday Night Dinner star Tom Rosenthal, with David Harewood of Homeland fame showing up at number five.
At this point, it’s tough to say which of those individuals, if any, will be whipping out the sonic screwdriver next, but again, Marshall’s been the most heavily rumored and at the moment, all signs do point to him snagging the role. Even once we learn the identity of the next Doctor though, we may not see them in the flesh for quite some time. After all, Rachel Talaly, who helmed the Christmas special, said that even she doesn’t know who’s set to step into the part, which suggests that the new Doctor might not be showing up until season 11.
Either way, it won’t be long now before the curtain’s pulled back on the actor/actress set to take the lead in Doctor Who next and you can bet that once their identity has been revealed, we’ll have it for you right here, so stay tuned.
