The grounded nature of Netflix’s Marvel TV shows is one of the many things which makes them so great, but the downside for comic book fans is the fact that it also means we’re far less likely to see any of these heroes suit up, including Danny Rand in Iron Fist.
In Daredevil, Matt Murdock didn’t get a version of his classic costume until the season 1 finale, while the Punisher took a similar amount of time to get the skull logo on his chest as well. Jessica Jones scoffed at the idea of a superhero costume altogether, while Luke Cage never even entertained the thought. Now, in a recent interview, Iron Fist showrunner Scott Buck has revealed that Danny will be following suit, as he won’t be donning the classic yellow and green look at any point during season 1.
“There was no good reason we could imagine to put Danny Rand in a costume. Because Danny Rand is still discovering who he is as a hero and where he is going to be, so he’s not yet ready to put on a mask or a costume. … At the same time he is someone who is rather well known as a billionaire, so he can’t necessarily go out in public and do the things he does without being recognized. It does become an issue for the character.”
That’s a shame, but it definitely sounds like Iron Fist will find a way of addressing the whole situation. Besides, by the time The Defenders rolls around, it’s entirely possible that Danny will get some sort of costume, while season 2 could also delve into that following his introduction later this month.
In some ways, it’s better to know that we won’t see the suit, as it means that fans won’t be quite as disappointed when it doesn’t show up. Still, we’d be lying if we said we aren’t hoping to have the yellow and green costume appear in Iron Fist somewhere down the line. It doesn’t need to be in the first season, but it’d certainly be a mistake if Marvel completely does away with it, don’t you think?
