If you ask most people, Star Trek: Discovery got off to a strong start with its debut season, honoring the legacy of past shows in the franchise while still blazing its own path with former Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green assuming the lead role of Michael Burnham.
So, it’s fair to say that there’s a good deal of anticipation lingering over season 2 (especially after today’s new trailer), which is expected to premiere by way of CBS All Access early next year. In fact, we finally got an exact release date earlier today at New York Comic Con, with the network announcing that January 17th, 2019 is when we’ll get to lay eyes on the show again.
As for what else we can expect, well, we know that the producers are hoping to dive much deeper into the wider Trek universe in the upcoming second season. Inhumans‘ Anson Mount is hopping aboard as the new captain, Christopher Pike, while Rebecca Romijn is his first mate Number One. Perhaps most exciting of all, though, is that Ethan Peck has joined the cast as Spock, becoming only the third actor to take on the role of the iconic Vulcan.
Furthermore, we’ve been told that this next run of Discovery will be inspired by “The Cage,” which was the pilot of The Original Series. Not only that, but season 2 is also said to have much more of a lighter tone to it than what’s come before, while also feeling more like classic Trek, which should please those who felt like the first season was too much of a departure from what they were used to.
Overall, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 appears to be taking the show in a more fan-pleasing direction and we can’t wait to see what else is in store for us when it returns to CBS All Access on January 17th.
