There’s a very good chance that the series (and season) finale of Sherlock airs this Sunday, January 15. Due to their busy schedules, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman can’t commit to the British mystery show as they once could, and that’s without mentioning creator Steven Moffat’s other projects like, you know, Doctor Who. But they’re not going to end it on a whimper. Oh no. Based on the teaser for Sunday’s episode, which you can see above, they’re going to end the detective series with a bang. A big one.
Judging from this brief, 20-second clip, Sherlock is going to conclude its fourth season with an intense, emotionally-charged finale that undoubtedly tests the limits of Sherlock (Cumberbatch) and Watson (Freeman) in their darkest hour. That the trailer ends with an explosion, quite literally, might upset those who like the grounded, contemplative TV series as it is, but we’ll have to wait until the episode airs before we jump to rash conclusions. Needless to say, Moffat and his crew won’t let Sherlock go quietly. This finale is going to be a loud one, that’s for sure.
In case there’s any doubt that this episode may, in fact, not be the last Sherlock installment, it’s titled “The Final Problem” and airs at a special time, 7/6c. Whether you’re ready for the acclaimed periodic series to wrap or not, the end is nigh, dear ones. Grab your tissues. Clench your fists. Ready your emotions. It’s coming, whether you like it or not. Prepare yourself accordingly.
