Marvel’s Secret Invasion has certainly been living up to its name up until now. The upcoming Disney Plus series has done a good job of keeping many a detail under wraps, but now that we have an official release date slated for this summer, it’s high time that we got a closer look at what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is planning to do with its venture into political thrillers.
Per Vanity Fair, that’s exactly what we’ve gotten. Beyond delectably grim set photos featuring the likes of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth, and Emilia Clarke’s new, out-of-left-field character G’iah, we’ve gotten quite a few hints at what we could be in for, including what could be a darker turn from a fan-favorite Avenger.
But it looks like Nick Fury’s most prominent adversary will be Gravik, the enigmatic leader of a Skrull resistance group that are getting fed up with the “secret” part of their eponymous secret invasion. And with Kingsley Ben-Adir bringing him to life, this is one villain that’s bound to leave an impression.
Gravik also has the distinction, along with Sonya Falsworth, of being an MCU-original character, so there’s no telling exactly what sort of personality could end up bursting out of Ben-Adir. But, given that his sect of rebels is driven by timed-out patience with humans, to say nothing of Secret Invasion‘s marked genre departure, it’s safe to expect a certain breed of complexity that we’re not used to seeing from Marvel villains, and that’s saying quite a bit considering the recent track record of such characters, who tend to shine quite brightly in even the weakest entries in the franchise.
Secret Invasion releases June 21 on Disney Plus.
