To go boldly where no one has gone before has been the pioneering spirit coursing through the veins of the Star Trek universe for generations, and it’s one that lives on through today’s first-look photo for Star Trek: Discovery, CBS’ long-gestating live-action series headed up by Sonequa Martin-Green of The Walking Dead fame.
Swapping Walkers for brave new (read: terrifying) worlds, Martin-Green assumes the role of First Officer Michael Burnham, a key player aboard the U.S.S. Discovery who serves under Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs) as the ship’s Number One – that is, the problem-solving second-in-command crew member who isn’t afraid to tackle situations head-on.
And that’s exactly what we see transpire up above. Standing alongside Michelle Yeoh (Captain Philippa Georgiou), this is an exciting tease of Discovery‘s two leading ladies, who appear to be surveying the arid, desert planet. Lean close enough and you’ll be able to spot a storm brewing on the horizon, while Star Trek aficionados ought to recognize the design of an old-fashioned communicator fastened to Burnham’s costume.
Could this signal the advent of the show’s first trailer? It’s possible; as EW points out, CBS’ upfront presentation is set to take place later this week, so we fully expect more intel to beam online over the coming days. Perhaps the network will finally offer up some indication as to when Star Trek: Discovery will debut via All Access? Who knows.
What we do know is that when the series lights up the small screen later in 2017, it’ll feature a cast comprised of James Frain (Gotham) as Spock’s father, Sarek, Hellboy‘s Doug Jones as Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and member of a new alien species in the Star Trek universe, and Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets.
