Ahead of its premiere on May 30th, Netflix has today lifted the curtain on the first House of Cards season 5 trailer, teasing a dark, brooding new chapter in the Underwood saga.
Last we checked in on Frank and Claire – Kevin Spacey and Wonder Woman star Robin Wright, respectively – they were in the midst of their whistle-stop tour of America, which makes sense given season 5 largely revolves around their campaign for re-election. One nation, Underwood?
Standing in their way is Joel Kinnaman’s charismatic Will Conway, a fierce opponent to both Frank and Claire after he started to make in-roads into the White House throughout the course of season 4. Now, that rivalry is beginning to bubble to the surface one again.
Behind the scenes, we know that Netflix has elected Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese as co-showrunners for the show’s fifth (and possibly final?) season, who picked up the torch once series creator and executive producer Beau Willimon made for the exit door in 2016. It’s impossible to gauge how Willimon’s absence will affect House of Cards season 5 – if at all – but we’re curious to see how the next chapter unfolds when placed in the hands of Gibson and Pugliese. Casting-wise, we know that Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Neve Campbell, Derek Cecil and Paul Sparks are all on board to reprise, while there’s also room for two newcomers: Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott.
“The American people don’t know what’s best for them…. I do.” Look for all 13 episodes of House of Cards season 5 to air via Netflix on May 30th. It’ll mark the beginning of a busy corridor for the online streamer, what with Orange is the New Black – another of Netflix’s binge-friendly original series – slated for June 9th.
