Before donning formal attire (read: a monstrous mo-cap suit) for Disney’s Beauty and the BeastDan Stevens will be headlining Legion, the mutant spinoff series that chronicles the origin story of David Haller, the estranged son of one Professor Charles Xavier.

It’s conveniently set in an all-new timeline, too, lending Noah Hawley and Co. enough creative leeway to carve out their own world that’s largely independent from Fox’s flagship mutant franchise. But will that result in a new, long-running series for the network? We’ll find out in early 2017.

Featuring a lead character shackled with schizophrenia, things are set to get pretty weird in FX’s Legion series, as these five mind-bending new promos attest. Embedded below, today’s media dump also offers us a chance to get acquainted with some of the show’s supporting characters, including Rachel Keller (Fargo), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and Jean Smart.

But this is very much David Haller’s story through and through, and the official logline reads as so: “David Haller/Legion has been diagnosed as schizophrenic for the voices and more he hears and sees – emphasis on the powerful more BTW. Set in an alternative universe from the Marvel franchise, Steven’s character has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years but an encounter with a new fellow patient reveals the diagnosis might have come up a bit short of the reality and power of Legion.”

FX will finally unleash Legion on Wednesday, February 8 at 10pm EST. The first season will comprise a total of eight episodes, and you can delve a little deeper into the network’s mutant spinoff series via the trippy new promos, below.
