The Flash’s Grant Gustin Got Flustered While Working With Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman

Five years into the job, Grant Gustin is an old pro at the superhero life. Over his career as Barry Allen in The Flash and the other assorted Arrowverse shows so far, he's had to do a lot of crazy stuff that you'd think would leave him a little blown away. The upcoming "Elseworlds" crossover provided the actor with the one moment that really left him flabbergasted, though: working with Tyler Hoechlin's Superman.

Supes has only appeared in The CW’s DC universe in a handful of episodes of Supergirl season 2, so fans can’t wait to see him return in the crossover, this time teaming up with other heroes like Gustin’s Scarlet Speedster and Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow (or vice versa, as the pair will swap identities for the event). However, it’s also been a big deal for Gustin, too.

As you can see in the snap above, which captures him and Amell reacting to Hoechlin dressed in a dark version of the Superman suit, Gustin was pretty excited to work with the Big Blue Boy Scout. Fans of the actor will know that he’s a lifelong fan of the Man of Steel and as such, this must have been like a dream come true.

Here’s how Gustin explained his memorable face in the snap to EW:

“That was just like genuine, ‘What are we supposed to do for this photo?’ I was so flustered when I saw him in that thing. I hadn’t worked with Tyler at all as Superman, so that was the trippiest thing I’ve experienced so far on the show.”

We think the reason Superman will be decked out in black in the crossover is due to the dangerous changes to reality that will occur in “Elseworlds” – like those that cause Barry and Oliver to swap bodies. This alteration appears to have turned the Last Son of Krypton into a villain, going by the way he’s strangling the Flash in a set photo, though we know that Hoechlin will return to the classic red and blue costume eventually.

Be sure to catch The Flash season 5 every Tuesday on The CW, while the “Elseworlds” crossover kicks off on December 9th.
