If Penny Dreadful isn’t doing enough to keep you up at night over at Showtime, FX has got you covered this summer. In July, the network will premiere The Strain, a grisly vampire thriller from horror maestro Guillermo del Toro and acclaimed author Chuck Hogan. Though the first episode is still months away, FX has been touting it heavily, with teasers upon teasers upon teasers for the series. The ads so far have been creepy and atmospheric without revealing much of anything about what The Strain will actually look like. That’s changing today though, with the release of an extended teaser that showcases more of the action and, more excitingly, our first glimpse of the parasitic vampires menacing mankind.
Of course, the new footage begs lots of questions, but I’m very happy with what’s included in this teaser. It’s by far our most in-depth look at The Strain yet, and early signs indicate that the series will do a good job of balancing its thriller aspects with more disturbing horror imagery. As far as this teaser goes, I’m most intrigued by that businessman’s strange eyes and the creature glimpsed at the end of the preview – unquestionably the Master, who is responsible for bringing a vampiric epidemic to New York City.
Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro, David Bradley, Natalie Brown, Kevin Durand, Jonathan Hyde, Sean Astin, Richard Sammel, Ben Hyland, Javier Botet and Doug Jones star in The Strain, which premieres on FX on July 13th.
A thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.
