FX just keeps rolling out the good news for its marquee anthology series, with American Horror Story and now the critically-adorned crime drama Fargo primed to return in 2016.
News of the latter’s renewal arrived earlier today, and though no cast or premiere dates were locked down, series creator Noah Hawley, John Cameron, Warren Littlefield, along with Joel and Ethan Coen are confirmed to executive produce the next outing.
“Year two of Fargo is an extraordinary achievement and, given Noah Hawley’s masterful storytelling, we can’t wait to see where the third, all-new version of Fargo takes us,” Schrier said along with FX Networks and FX Productions president of programming Eric Schrier, who announced the pickup alongside fellow president Nick Grad. “Our thanks to Noah, Warren, Joel and Ethan, John and our partners at MGM Television for making Fargo such a memorable and rewarding journey.”
Based on the Coen brothers’ revered 1996 drama of the same name, Fargo received high praise in its jump from one medium to another, earning no less than 18 Emmy nominations after its inaugural season in 2014. By all accounts, it’s a seal of quality that the series continue to champion during its second outing on the airwaves, and today’s confirmation of season 3 underlines just how well Fargo is performing with audiences, too.
Currently mid-way through its sophomore stint, Fargo season 2 is situated in 1979 and stars Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Jean Smart, Nick Offerman, Brad Garrett and Kieran Culkin. It’s set quite the high bar for a follow-up, though we’re excited to see where FX take the series next.
