Dark and difficult times lie ahead for Ser Jorah Mormont.
Ever since Game of Thrones season 5, Iain Glen’s character has been left nursing a bad case of Greyscale, and spent much of last season desperately searching for a cure. It leaves the former Lord of Bear Island in quite the predicament, with question marks looming over his ultimate fate. Death is never too far away on Game of Thrones, that much we know, but despite his character’s impending doom, Iain Glen is still looking forward to season 7 with a hushed excitement.
As a matter of fact, when Entertainment Weekly caught up with the Game of Thrones star, Glen even went so far as to claim that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have produced some of the show’s best scripts yet.
I wrote to Dan and David and I said I thought they were the best seven episodes they’ve ever written. The story is going toward a conclusion. There’s no sense of treading water. You have storylines colliding. And the evolving drama and relationships are as good as they have ever been. It definitely feels like the beginning of the end game.
Considering that Benioff and Weiss have crafted some of the best episodes yet (see: “Mothers Mercy” and “Battle of the Bastards”), Iain Glen’s claims are enough to leave any Game of Thrones fan giddy with excitement. Besides, Glen has been involved in HBO’s fantasy flagship since its inception, so he knows a good script when he sees one.
When pressed about his Jorah Mormont, though, the actor conceded that Mormont is still pining for Daenerys’ forgiveness:
My feeling is Jorah would die a happy man if he could get forgiveness from Daenerys. He’s been in that mental territory half his life. He’s always been willing to sacrifices his life for her. His loss of life is not as big for him as seeking her redemption.
Game of Thrones returns for a truncated seventh season on July 16th. The TV version of A Song of Ice and Fire won’t end there, though, what with plans in place for an eighth and final season (2018), not to mention the fact that HBO is currently in the process of mulling over multiple prequel series – in fact, according to George R.R. Martin, there are five pitches in contention, just don’t hold your breath for Dunk and Egg or Robert’s Rebellion.
