Would you set aside time for HBO’s Game of Thrones if it was still airing in the year 2025?
That’s the question posed by series author and all-around Westeros mastermind George R.R. Martin, who believes the hit fantasy drama had enough juice in the tank to last for 13 seasons.
Martin spoke to Variety at the Emmy Awards this past weekend, where he admitted that the Game of Thrones novel saga – Winds of Winter included – has plenty of material and fantasy fodder to last the Great Winter, and allow its TV counterpart to march forward right up until the thirteenth season. What was that saying about a show jumping the shark?
Regardless, here’s what Martin had to say about Thrones approaching its curtain call after precisely eight seasons.
I don’t know. Ask David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] when they come through. We could have gone to 11, 12, 13 seasons, but I guess they wanted a life. If you’ve read my novels, you know there was enough material for more seasons. They made certain cuts, but that’s fine.
As any Thrones fan will tell you, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss adopted an ‘all thriller, no filler’ mentality when handling what is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious and indeed tremendous adaptations of the current TV era.
So, it’s with a heavy heart that we must tell you that Game of Thrones is fast approaching its eighth and final season. A mid-2019 premiere date seems to be on the cards, though HBO is yet to announce anything official. And don’t fret; there’s still life for Westeros beyond 2019, as the Powers That Be have already drafted up plans for a bona fide successor series, one which George R.R. Martin will produce.
