Is Blair (Leighton Meester) having Chuck’s (Ed Westick) baby? That’s what many fans seemed to think as the fifth season of the CW’s signature series Gossip Girl came to a close with the reveal of a positive pregnancy test in a trash can. Of course, Blair isn’t marrying Chuck, she’s marrying the Prince of Monaco.
As for Serena (Blake Lively), she finished the season off to Los Angeles to begin her new writing gig while Chuck and Nate (Chace Crawford) hit the road together for a world tour. Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) has moved to Spain for college but not before dropping Dan’s (Penn Badgley) time bomb of a memoir off at the publisher. Dan meanwhile is spending the summer in the Hamptons, blissfully unaware of his new status as a published author or that his now ex-girlfriend Charlie (Kaylee DeFer) was actually a con artist.
Season five of Gossip Girl will, as season four did, get away from New York City, for a little while. Last season it was Paris, this year Serena, Chuck and Nate are hanging on the West Coast while Blair returns to NYC for wedding planning, something that fans will have to get used to; the Royal Wedding is set to be a season long arc. Finally, Dan has just found out that Vanessa got his book published and is now trying to stop it before it explodes all over the UES.
What’s up for season five of Gossip Girl? No more Taylor Momsen. The trash-pop star has abandoned the series after four seasons as Jenny Humphrey. According to TVLine the series won’t pretend Jenny didn’t exist. Rather, Jenny’s disappearing act will be addressed in the series premiere.
Also gone is Jessica Szohr’s troublemaker Vanessa. After upending Dan’s life by getting his book published, Vanessa left for Spain. In reality, Szohr’s contract was simply not renewed. No worries for her fans though, Szohr is making the move to the big screen co-starring in the Sarah Jessica Parker comedy I Don’t Know How She Does It.
So, with two so prominent bad girls exiting the show you might think things would get boring on the Upper East Side. Thankfully, producers have filled the void with Kaylee Defer’s Charlie, or is it Ivy? DeFer will be the show’s new resident troublemaker now that she has been promoted to full time series regular.
Joining the series in the season premiere is Elizabeth Hurley who will play Nate’s Los Angeles cougar conquest. Ah, but Hurley is here for more than just a fling. Hurley’s Diana Payne has something in store for the Gossip Girl herself, voice of Kristen Bell, that will play out throughout season five though don’t expect the mysterious blogger to be unmasked, at least not yet.
The Gossip Girl season 5 opener is titled “Yes Than Zero,” a pop cultural nod to the series temporary new west coast home. The preview linked below demonstrates all of the fun, chatty, catty, sexy, nastiness that fans have come to love about this guilty pleasure hothouse drama. The series will celebrate its 100th episode this season and fans can expect fireworks.
Gossip Girl returns to the CW on Monday, September 26th.
