We’ve been hearing from Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller for some time now that both the Joker and Mr. Freeze would factor heavily into the show’s sophomore season, and now it’s been made official. Fox has released the synopsis for the first episode of Gotham‘s second season, which promises to dive right into the origins of the Clown Prince of Crime and Victor Fries:
“The stakes are higher than ever as Gotham explores the origin stories of some of the most ambitious and depraved Super Villains, including The Riddler, The Joker and Mr. Freeze, and Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) uncovers more secrets from his father’s past, in the Season Two debut on Monday, Sept. 21 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).”
Mr. Freeze has yet to make his debut on the series, and still has yet to be cast, so there’s no telling how Gotham will treat the iconic member of Batman’s rogues gallery. As for the Joker, he has shown his face in Gotham City, played by Shameless actor Cameron Monaghan. His small role was, I thought, a perfect glimpse at the character and I sincerely hope that the series doesn’t go overboard with him in season 2.
[zerg]It’s also interesting to hear that the Riddler will get more time in the spotlight next season. While Cory Michael Smith’s Edward Nygma was a recurring cast member in season one, he didn’t start showing his villainous side until the finale. His character may have gotten off to a rocky start, but there’s still potential there for a great character story.
Gotham will return to Fox on Monday, September 21st, 2015.
