If you’re current on Gotham happenings, then you’re well aware of how the city was ravaged by bombs Jeremiah Valeska and Ra’s al Ghul planted around town. And in the wake of that destruction, numerous gangs will begin carving out their territory, with the likes of Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Firefly and others setting up shop throughout various neighborhoods.
If this at all sounds familiar to comic book readers, it should, because the producers are borrowing heavily from the classic story arc known as No Man’s Land, in addition to the more recent Batman: Zero Year. Truth be told, it’s entirely possible for those somewhat post-apocalyptic tales to gel into one coherent narrative.
Funny enough, one of those titles is being flipped, as the creative minds behind the series have dubbed the premiere episode “Year Zero,” which forces me to recall my favorite song from the band Ghost. But no matter what you wish to call it, dark days are most assuredly ahead, as we can plainly see below in the first poster teasing season 5.
Personally, I find it quite odd that Ben McKenzie’s James Gordon is the only member of the cast pictured, especially when you consider how Bruce Wayne is primed to become Batman in the series finale. In most cases, first posters such as these end up serving as the eventual Blu-ray cover art, so that only adds to my confusion – but at least the proto-Batsignal can be spotted in the background.
Before we part ways, be sure to also check out this freshly released synopsis:
With Gotham on the brink of total anarchy and cut off from the outside world, only Jim Gordon, Bruce Wayne and a handful of heroes remain behind to retake the city. Inspired by the “No Man’s Land” arc from the comics, villains including Penguin, the Riddler, the Sirens and Jeremiah have taken claim on various regions of the city. Will order be restored, or will chaos reign in Gotham?
Gotham returns for its fifth season sometime in early 2019 on Fox.
