Netflix’s House of Cards astounded viewers when the first season launched on the streaming service earlier this year. The political thriller filled with corruption, hatred and double-crosses was a perfect cocktail for a chilly February, and the David Fincher-produced drama went on to claim a Primetime Emmy and stronger Netflix membership. Season 2 is set for release early next year, and today sees the release of of a new trailer to get us all excited.
Netflix is playing this one close to the chest, with a moody, quick-cut trailer that offers very little in terms of solid plot points. At the very least, it shows that Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) may be upping the ante of his evil agenda and causing much more trouble for those that oppose him.
Based on a BBC series of the same name, House of Cards follows Underwood, a House Majority Whip who is betrayed by the President Elect and sets off on a path of revenge to undermine, blackmail, and ultimately control every part of the administration he can get his hands on. The saccharine delight of the BBC’s version of the show gives way to pure malice and cruelty in Kevin Spacey’s turn as the character, and the habit of Francis to frequently break the fourth wall to discuss his plot and his distaste with those around him is maintained. Spacey’s downright sinister performance as Francis Underwood may be one of the highlights of his career.
House of Cards will get its full second season run exclusively on Netflix’s streaming service when all episodes release simultaneously on February 14, 2014. If you haven’t caught up yet, Season 1 is on Netflix now too, so you have no excuse not to start watching.
