Marvel’s Iron Fist premiered on Netflix this week and many fans have already binged their way through all 13 episodes. If you’re one of those people, you’ll know full well about the addition of two surprise characters that weren’t announced along with the rest of the cast: Bakuto (Ramon Rodriguez) and Davos (Sacha Dhawan).
While the former played a relatively minor antagonistic role, Davos, AKA The Steel Serpent, was introduced as Danny Rand’s best friend from K’un-Lun, who initially helped the Iron Fist in his battles against the Hand before turning against his “brother” right at the end of the season. Though many seemed to feel his betrayal was a little rushed, it does stay true to his character’s arc in the comics, and sets up an intense and bitter rivalry between the former friends at some point down the line.
Though Iron Fist has yet to be renewed for a second season (it almost certainly will be, despite the negative critical reaction), during an interview with Radio Times, Dhawan teased Davos’ return in another batch of episodes once The Defenders wraps up:
I’m not in the Defenders, no. The crux of Danny and Davos’ story I think really begins towards the end of season 1, and I think they didn’t want to start it straight away into the Defenders, and wanted to save it for series 2.
It’ll be interesting to see how Davos’ story converges with Joy Meachum’s, who, even more inexplicably, seems to turn against Danny in the closing moments of the season finale. Again, though, this mirrors the comics, as Davos often aligned himself with the Meachums in his attempts to destroy Rand and claim the power of the Iron Fist for himself.
