Warner Bros.’ upcoming digital service, which has officially been named DC Universe as of earlier today, has opened its doors to Swamp Thing, the fan-favorite comic book character who’s about to get a TV show of his own.
From what we understand, the project is a script-to-series order, meaning if the story treatment strikes a chord with the Powers That Be, Warner Bros. will commit to a full-blown, live-action drama based on the original characters drawn up by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson all those years ago.
That’s a responsibility that has been placed upon the shoulders of Mark Verheiden (Ash vs. Evil Dead, Marvel’s Daredevil) and Gary Dauberman (It: Chapter Two), who have both signed on to co-write Swamp Thing, and potentially serve as showrunners – providing everything falls into place, that is.
And most exciting of all? James Wan (Aquaman) will executive produce. Yes, one of horror’s brightest talents is on board and taking to Twitter earlier today, the filmmaker teased us with what we can expect from the project.
“Been developing this “vegetarian hero” for awhile now With a great team,” he wrote. “Happy to finally share. Expect — mood, mystery, gothic romance, and swamp monsters!”
Sounds promising, right? Hopefully everything works out here, as Swamp Thing is a character that fans have been calling to see in live-action for a while now. Of course, there have been a few adaptations over the years, but nothing terribly memorable. Thankfully, then, it sounds like DC is hoping to get it right this time and with Wan on board, they’re certainly off to a good start.
Swamp Thing will find a home on the company’s new streaming service, which, as we said above, has been christened DC Universe, a “first-of-its kind, immersive digital experience designed just for DC fans.” There, it’ll join Titans, Young Justice: Outsiders and a Harley Quinn animated show. It’s a promising line-up of content, to be sure, and as soon as we hear more on any of these projects, we’ll be sure to let you know.
