Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stumbled out of the gate (despite having a pilot directed by The Avengers helmer Joss Whedon), and while it’s since found its footing, the show has never managed to get back to the sort of ratings it debuted with. However, with a new later timeslot this Fall, it sounds like the series could be about to undergo something of a tonal shift.
Will that bring more eyes to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? It’s hard to say, but with Ghost Rider set to appear in season four, fans definitely have at least a couple of new reasons to revisit the show. Talking in the video above, Marvel Television boss Jeph Loeb actually sheds some light on why the series airing at 10pm could bring things more in line with the likes of Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
“By going to 10 o’clock, we’re going to be taking on just a little bit more edge, a little bit more grit. The show is pretty violent for something at 9 o’clock, but when we get to 10 o’clock, we’re going to be just a little hair of something that I think people are going to really enjoy.”
While we’re probably not going to see the likes of Agent Coulson and Quake dropping expletives or being beaten as brutally as the Man Without Fear, a more “grown-up” approach to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may very well be exactly what the ABC series needs to stay afloat amid low ratings and the recent cancellation of Agent Carter.
