Five years after it ended its ninth and final season, it’s been revealed that The Office is returning to television.
The other month, news broke that NBC has scheduled the revival of the hit workplace mockumentary comedy series for the 2018/19 season. It won’t be a remake or a reboot though and will instead continue the lives of the hapless workforce at the offices of Dunder Mifflin’s branch in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
From what we understand, the revival will feature a blend of new and old characters, and it’s been made clear that Steve Carell will NOT be reprising his role as the branch’s regional manager, Michael Scott. Though a little disappointing, it’s not all that surprising considering that Carell left the original run of The Office after season 7. As for who WILL be returning, well, that’s still up in the air. But if John Krasinski has his way, he might be back for more.
Speaking on Ellen earlier today, the actor, who played Jim Halpert for the entire run of the show, revealed that as of yet, he hasn’t gotten a call about returning:
“I did hear [about ‘The Office’ revival], on the Internet. Guess who didn’t get a call? Me!”
Though he said he was a bit upset about not being asked back, he revealed that he’d totally be up for more, saying:
“Are you kidding? I’d love to get that gang back together.”
Krasinski’s comments here follow on from his co-star, Jenna Fischer, who also said that she’d love to return. She too, though, has yet to get a call, which could indicate that either the project has fizzled out, is still in the earliest stages of development or just has no plans to include Jim and Pam in its storyline.
If that’s the case, well, we’re not too crazy about the idea of a load of new characters cluttering things up, but fingers crossed that the break has done the writers some good and they’ll be able to up their game again. It will also be interesting to see just how many of the old cast members return – since it doesn’t sound like Krasinski and Fischer will be. At least, not yet.
