Is John Ridley’s Secret Marvel TV Series About Ms. Marvel?

Late last week, news broke that Academy Award winning screenwriter and producer John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, American Crime) was developing a secret television project for Marvel Studios. Now, a rumor has surfaced suggesting that it could in fact focus on Kamala Khan, the Muslim-American, teenage superhero known as Ms. Marvel.

The short answer is: Yes. According to the report, Marvel could employ a “slow burn” approach to her origin story, a la Daredevil‘s season-long origin arc seen in his new Netflix series. The show could explore Khan’s fascination with superheroes in general, while “balancing issues of religion, racism and Islamophobia along with her crime fighting.” It could also introduce the Ms. Marvel moniker later on, once Danvers is established in the larger Cinematic Universe.

The show, if it is in fact real, would air in the winter while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on hiatus, just as Agent Carter did earlier this year, and could act as a bridge between S.H.I.E.L.D. and its upcoming spinoff series.

With a bit of creative shuffling, it’s easy to see how a Ms. Marvel series could be handled on TV, even without a pre-established Captain Marvel character for Khan to idolize. S.H.I.E.L.D. has already laid the groundwork for the Inhumans in the MCU, so this would just be one way to build on that before the Inhumans film hits theaters in 2019. The idea of tackling Islamophobia certainly sounds like something Ridley would be interested in, and this could be a fine way for Marvel and ABC to capitalize off of the current popularity of the character, who began headlining her own series just this past February and will join the ranks of The Avengers later this year.

So, as I said, this may very well turn out to be nothing more than a ruse, but it’s one that could in fact lead to a compelling TV series.

Tell us, what do you think of the possibility of a Ms. Marvel TV series from John Ridley? Could it work, or do we need to see Captain Marvel first? Sound off in the comments below.
