Ozark actress Julia Garner will star alongside Anna Chlumsky, Katie Lowes, and Laverne Cox in Shonda Rhimes’ new miniseries Inventing Anna. The series is inspired by the true story of the upscale con artist and faux German heiress Anna Delvey who bilked the rich and powerful of New York City’s upscale party set out of millions before being convicted of multiple counts of grand larceny in 2019.
Rhimes tweeted yesterday telling fans to get ready for the series trailer, which dropped today. Although Rhimes’ served as executive producer on Netflix’s massive hit of last year, Bridgerton will be the first Netflix series she will serve as creator and showrunner on.
Veep’s Anna Chlumsky will star as a journalist who becomes intrigued by socialite Anna Delvey, played by Garner and, presumably exposes her as a fraud and swindler. Cox and Lowes will serve in supporting roles. The series, based on the New York article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” by Jessica Pressler, may be a game-changer for Garner, who appears totally transformed in the trailer, as well as Chlumsky, who has successfully negotiated her child star past with impressive supporting work but has yet to anchor a series. Garner has similarly done outstanding work as a supporting actress in several critically acclaimed projects such as The Americans and Modern Love.
The cast also includes Jeff Perry, Arian Moayed, Alexis Floyd, Anders Holm, Anna Deavere Smith, and Terry Kinney, many of whom have worked on Rhimes network hit Scandal, which concluded in 2018.
Inventing Anna will premiere on Netflix on Feb. 11, 2022. Lena Dunham is also working on a project about Delvey for HBO.
