The premiere also does a great job of foreshadowing the emotional battle that Raylan is experiencing, and will probably continue to go through for the rest of the season (maybe longer). After the potentially explosive rocking chair situation last season at the hands of the Dixie Mafia where he almost lost both Winona (Natalie Zea) and the baby, it’s understandable that he would have some reservations about fatherhood.
Raylan is a lot of things, but family man isn’t exactly something that he can include on his resume. You may recall his sorted history with his own father as a testament to that. Hopefully that’s something that will change as he re-prioritizes what’s ultimately important to him, yet it seems like that would almost be self-defeating. His character is so appealing and effective in his profession primarily because of his ‘take no prisoner’ attitude. It’s almost scary to think of the shell of his former self he might develop into at the risk of other people becoming so influential in his decision making process.
I’m not opposed to seeing Raylan go on a journey of self-discovery, or becoming the father he never had, but not at the cost of good TV. If it fits into the story arc, then more power to the writers behind Justified. Otherwise, let’s leave well enough alone and let him get the job done.
Where did you land on Justified’s return tonight? Do you think Raylan is gearing up for his greatest season yet, or is he already falling short? Let us know all your thoughts in the comment section below!
