Having spent the last decade being largely defined by his self-centered actions and overt narcissism, nobody could have been too surprised that when Tom Hiddleston’s Loki was eventually brought into the path of a potential love interest, it turned out to be a variant of himself.
Up until he forged a connection with Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie, the Asgardian trickster had only ever had eyes for numero uno, so in that sense it was a logical progression that he’d end up galling head over heels for… himself, kind of. Of course, Sylvie wasn’t much like the MCU’s canonical God of Mischief at all, but it still left fans feeling a little queasy as the tension between them ratcheted up several significant notches over the last six weeks.
Some people were still holding onto the faintest glimmer of hope that it turn out to be platonic in the long run, despite several key members of the team saying exactly the opposite, but yesterday’s finale finally saw the two Loki seal it with a kiss, and naturally a lot of folks were not happy about it, as you can see from the reactions below.
On the plus side for those weirded out by the Loki-on-Loki action, it’s not as if they’ll be playing happy families and overseeing the TVA as the Sacred Timeline’s new power couple when Sylvie swiftly proceeded to boot her opposite number back through the multiverse and into the wrong timeline, before stabbing Jonathan Majors’ debuting Kang the Conqueror through the heart and messing things up pretty badly.
The last shot of Sylvie we saw before the finale ended made it look like she may already be regretting her decision, but with Season 2 confirmed, Loki fans will have to make their peace with the fact their burgeoning love/hate/treachery relationship is only just beginning.
