This weekend brought us our (blurry) first look at the upcoming Loki TV series for Disney Plus. At an Investors’ Day for Disney, Marvel’s Kevin Feige revealed some concept art for the show along with the official logo. Though only a snap of the presentation has made it online, the picture tells us enough about Loki to start working out what the series will be like.
The obvious thing is that it confirms Tom Hiddleston will appear in the flesh as the God of Mischief, after earlier reports pointed to him providing a voiceover-only role. What’s more, though, the location seen in the concept art tells us that the trickster will be setting foot in New York City in 1975. We can pinpoint the year thanks to the fact that Jaws is being screened behind him.
In contrast to the appearance of Hiddleston disproving one report, the 1970s setting might prove another. Story leaks had suggested that the series would follow the Asgardian as he hopped down to Midgard and interfered at various points of human history for his own ends/amusement. It might be that the 1970s won’t be the central setting of the Loki show but just one of many time periods that the anti-villain visits.
Loki was also expected to be a prequel, but with Hiddleston’s involvement, this is less certain. Avengers: Endgame introduced time travel, after all, so anything’s possible now. Especially as it likewise resurrected Loki, with him vanishing with the Tesseract in 2012 New York, thereby creating a branched timeline. We’ve heard that all the Disney Plus shows will be set post-Endgame, too, so we might find be about to find out what happened to the God of Mischief afterwards.
Loki is expected to shoot later this year, as is WandaVision and Falcon and Winter Soldier, and will arrive on the streaming platform in 2020.
