Marvel‘s street-level heroes will remain on Netflix for the foreseeable future, and that’s despite Disney grabbing hold of 21st Century Fox’s assets in what was, by all accounts, a landmark deal. That means future instalments of Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Iron Fist – not to mention spinoff series in the vein of The Punisher – will remain where they are.
But what about any new shows that the House of Ideas might be cooking up? Could those see a release on Netflix, too? Possibly, though it sure doesn’t seem likely. Speaking to Bloomberg today, Marvel Entertainment president Dan Buckley said something which very strongly hinted that the studio will be putting all future efforts on that Disney streaming service we keep hearing so much about.
See if you can read between the lines:
“We obviously want the Marvel Television series currently on Netflix to have a long and lauded run, but [new projects] will seek out networks and platforms that are the best fit for that content, including the Disney-branded streaming service.”
Yup, that means you can say goodbye to those rumours about Blade or Moon Knight getting their own Netflix series at some point. Sure, there’s nothing stopping those characters and many others from finding homes on Disney-owned outlets, just don’t expect to see them rub shoulders with any of The Defenders.
While that obviously makes sense from a business standpoint, it is a bit of a shame. As it is, there’s already more red tape between Marvel’s various properties than there should be and moving their future shows to Disney’s streaming service will only create more. Which means that there will be less chances and opportunities for crossovers, team-ups and the like.
I mean, wouldn’t it be nice to live in a world where the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could hop into Hell’s Kitchen and help Daredevil and co. out once in a while? Or where the Runaways could cross paths with Cloak and Dagger? Alas, things just don’t work like that and for now, we’ll have to make do with having Marvel‘s various TV shows spread out over several different streaming services and networks – whether we like it or not.
