Man, it really sucks being a teenager. You’ve got to worry about curfews, teachers on your case about grades, being popular in school, getting that first boy/girlfriend, trying to keep your telepathic dinosaur buddy out of trouble, finding out your parents are secretly supervillains… Actually, maybe only the Runaways only have to worry about those last two.
Written by comic book star Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man and Saga), the award-winning Runaways follows a gang of teenagers who first discover that their parents are part of a superhero cabal called The Pride and then that they’ve inherited their superpowers (and a dinosaur). Shocked by what the adults have been up to they, well, run away.
Debuting in 2003, the comic was an instant hit and with Marvel very much in vogue, it was really a question of when, not if we’d see a live-action adaptation. Runaways originally began production in 2008 with a projected release date of 2011, but Marvel’s evolving plans for the MCU put the brakes on that, until now.
Today, we’re getting our first proper look at Runaways thanks to the photos up in the gallery above, which feature Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes (telepathic), Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru (witchy powers), Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder (master strategist), Gregg Sulkin as Chase Stein (flame generating gauntlets), Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean (solar-powered alien), Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez (mutant with superstrength), and Old Lace (a dinosaur). Unfortunately, these promo pics don’t include that last character, but we’ve been assured that she’s indeed in the show.
Their foes/parents, The Pride, are played by Brigid Branagh (Stacey Yorkes), Kevin Weisman (Dale Yorkes), James Marsters (Victor Stein), Ryan Sands (Geoffrey Wilder), Ever Carradine (Janet Stein), Angel Parker (Catherine Wilder), Annie Wersching (Leslie Dean), James Yaegashi (Robert Minoru) and Brittany Ishibashi (Tina Minoru), each of whom is as calculating as they are deadly, and will stop at nothing to bring back their wayward sons and daughters.
The first episode of Runaways exclusively premieres on Hulu on November 21st, so expect a trailer to drop pretty soon.
