You don’t need us to tell you that comic book movie fans aren’t the calmest people on the internet. At any given time, there are legions of spit-flecked bearded men yelling into a webcam that Hollywood has somehow gotten a superhero wrong. This simmering resentment and unearned sense of entitlement are usually reflected in the user ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with shows that don’t necessarily cater to white men aged 20-35 suffering extensive review-bombing.
One of the worst-hit was 2022’s Ms. Marvel, which committed the apparently unforgivable sin of having a teenage Muslim girl heroine rather than some lantern-jawed Aryan ubermensch. The negative user reviews came thick and fast, to the point where we were in the bizarre situation of it being Marvel Studios’ biggest critical smash and simultaneously its worst received by fans.
Now some audiences are belatedly checking Ms. Marvel out and realizing that it’s actually awesome:
This Redditor has nailed why Ms Marvel was so great and we’re still hopeful we’ll eventually get a second season continuing Kamala Khan’s adventures. Before that, Iman Vellani is set to make her movie debut in Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels later this year, where she’ll be a third of an unlikely trio of Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau.
Beyond that, the dangling plot thread of Kamala being a mutant must at some point be dealt with. We’re hoping that she becomes a part of any future MCU X-Men team, so fingers crossed she gets to enroll in Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters very soon.
