Inhumans is a show that is bursting at the seams with ambition and sky-high potential, not least because it heralds the introduction of Marvel’s beloved Royal Family.
But after plans for a feature film were scrapped in favor of an eight-part TV series, questions were raised as to how Black Bolt and the otherworldly city of Attilan could be crammed onto the small screen. To their credit, Marvel and ABC have vowed to create cinema-quality visual effects that will be projected across select IMAX theaters from September 1st, when the first two episodes of Inhumans will be available to watch on the large-screen format. Three weeks later, the family drama will then make its way onto ABC, where it’ll join Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
And as one would expect, Marvel is pushing Inhumans hard at the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con, with last night’s panel heralding a full-length trailer for the starry drama series. In it, we caught new looks at Black Bolt (Anson Mount), Medusa (Serinda Swan), and Maximus (Rheon) in action, as the latter began plotting treason against his elder brother. But for all of the show’s blue-sky thinking, not to mention the promise of cinema-quality visual effects, a handful of critics in attendance at SDCC have relayed their thoughts via Twitter and, well, let’s just say they didn’t pull any punches. It makes for a fairly damning assessment of Inhumans, but what do you think?
…school level looking visual effects, unmotivated overlit conematography, unnecessary slow motion shots. The crowd laughed at the footage.

one positive note: it's cool to see a tv show shot in (digital) Imax filling that IMAX screen in a theater. Now if only a better show?

Saw the Inhumans trailer at the IMAX tonight. I say this as a big Marvel fan: that show looks laughably, outrageously, aggressively awful. pic.twitter.com/3JVxflBYmg

There's something strange about the Inhumans trailer in that it looks like a high budget fan film– except WITHOUT all the passion and joy.

Marvel’s Inhumans will premiere via select IMAX theaters on September 1st, before all eight episodes hit ABC on September 29th. In light of this seemingly underwhelmingly showcase at SDCC, though, have your expectations changed at all? Or are you still intrigued to watch the final product in two months’ time? Let us know your thoughts in the usual place.
