Following months of casting announcements, speculation and rumors, production on CBS’ forthcoming comic book series Supergirl geared up this week. With the pilot primed and ready for take off, a few snaps of the first production slate hit the web, rather unceremoniously. That moment of excitement has since been overshadowed, however, by our first real look at Melissa Benoist suited up as the titular superhero.
Talk concerning the costume of Kara Zor-El for the impending small screen reboot stirred up back in January, when CBS chairperson Nina Tassler dropped a couple of hints stating that the finished spectacle was an “awesome costume.” On the basis of this first couple of snaps, we’d have to agree entirely with Tassler’s comments.
Maintaining a certain degree of “costume consistency” across related DC properties was a chief concern for CBS. So, the network opted to employ the Oscar-winning skills of Colleen Atwood, who worked on The CW’s DC shows, The Flash and Arrow, to sculpt a new look for the heroine.
“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past,” Atwood says of her duties, “but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”
Gone are the typical mid-riff baring tops that Supergirl typically dons in the comics, along with her bleach blonde tresses. It’s a step towards what Atwood dubbed a ‘street-style’ form of modern superhero, who would definitely benefit from keeping her centrally-located organs at optimal temperature. Plus, crop tops are a bit ’90s, no?
From The Flash and Arrow creator-producer Greg Berlanti, Supergirl co-stars Calista Flockhart, David Harewood, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, Laura Benanti and Jeremy Jordan. Two recognizable franchise names – Dean Cain and Helen Slater – are also on board for two as-yet unrevealed guest roles.
