The massive influx of superheroes across screens big and small has been fast and, at times, a little overwhelming. From Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to Task Force X, The Defenders to DC’s thriving Arrowverse, you’d be forgiven for losing track of all the many spinning plates currently in active production.
But similarly to how Tim Miller’s breathless Deadpool movie flew in the face of convention in 2016, Amazon and Ben Edlund are on the verge of launching a TV reboot that pokes fun at the superhero genre and its many idiosyncrasies. We are, of course, referring to the small screen reboot of The Tick, which is now due to premiere via Amazon Prime on August 25th – and there’s a cheeky new teaser to prove it.
Whereas Patrick Warburton (A Series of Unfortunate Events) assumed the title role more than a decade ago, this fresh revival introduces Peter Serafinowicz as The Tick, a larger-than-life costumed crusader that lends a helping hand to Arthur (Griffin Newman) during his most desperate hour. Is he the hero he makes himself out to be? Or is Serafinowicz’s character simply a figment of Arthur’s imagination? We’ll be able to find out once Ben Edlund’s revival scurries onto the small screen in August.
In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, an underdog accountant (Griffin Newman) with zero powers comes to realize his city is owned by a global super villain long-thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero (Peter Serafinowicz).
The Tick heralds the arrival of Serafinowicz’s big blue hero on August 25th. And if today’s wonderfully sardonic teaser is any indication, genre fans should be in for a treat when Amazon’s latest original series graces the airwaves in a few months’ time.
