The Man of Steel’s latest animated series has been met with mostly positive responses so far, with support from the new DCU Superman, but many are in agreement, the show needs to work on its villain designs.
While the anime-inspired look of the show has a wide appeal, it doesn’t really do any favors for villains like Deathstroke who usually have a more intimidating look. That isn’t really the case in My Adventures With Superman as the art style removes the grizzled and threatening aura and fans were quick to notice. Needless to say, they were not impressed.
The design makes him look more like a villain from a Pokemon game rather than a DC villain. What was wrong with just having the eyepatch? To top it all off, the character is played by none other than Chris Parnell, aka Jerry from Rick and Morty. And yes, he does sound almost exactly the same in both shows, so if you’ve ever watched Rick and Morty, you’re going to be stuck hearing Jerry Smith whenever Slade Wilson talks. That, coupled with his overly anime-styled design makes it almost impossible to see the character as a genuine threat.
Oh, and we’ll be getting Amanda Waller and the Suicide Squad appearing soon enough. Fans aren’t looking forward to that either.
“Oh we’re getting Amanda Waller and the Suicide Squad in this? I’m….concerned.”
Of course, a completely new look was to be expected. No one escaped the hefty artistic changes made by Adult Swim. However, there’s no doubt that Deathstroke bore the brunt of it. Compared to how he’s been drawn in previous animated shows it’s a stark contrast that doesn’t really do the original character justice. However, we’re only two episodes in, and aside from that, the show is doing pretty well so far.
