Based on the 2011 Australian miniseries of the same, the Americanized version of The Slap has a couple of new additions to its impressive cast. Zachary Quinto (Heroes, American Horror Story) and Brian Cox (Manhunter) have signed on to co-star in this modern morality tale. Set around an altercation at a family barbeque, the story involves the repercussions after one man slaps a badly behaving child. The kid’s not his, hence the heightened social responsibility aspect that’s no doubt gonna make Christmas awkward.
Quinto is in line to play the slapper (ahem), Harry. A married man with a teenage boy, he deals in antiquated European cars. And it would seem punishment, as well. Cox will play the family’s gruff old-time grandpa, Manolis. They’ll both co-star opposite Peter Sarsgaard as Hector, a married man with kids who submits to the advances of a much younger woman, and Mary Louise Parker, as Anouk, a close friend of Hector’s.
The show is set to go into production soon, with an order for 8 hour-long episodes. Written by Brothers And Sisters‘ Jon Robin Baitz and produced by The Kids Are All Right‘s Lisa Cholodenko – it looks like a provocative spot of TV.

It’s Hector’s 40th birthday, and his wife is throwing him a big party with lots of friends, family and food for what will undoubtedly be a happy, celebratory day. Or so they think. As Hector tries to navigate family politics, awkward friendships and the younger woman he’s secretly seeing on the side, the built-up tension explodes when Hector’s hotheaded cousin slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. Everyone is understandably stunned, and the party abruptly ends – with the child’s parents vowing legal action as they leave. But what the hosts and guests don’t know is that this moment will ignite a chain of events that will uncover long-buried secrets within this group of friends and family… and vigorously challenge the core values of everyone involved.
