With all the awards attention paid to Netflix’s political drama House of Cards and prison dramedy Orange Is the New Black, it’s extremely easy to forget about the streaming giant’s other noteworthy original series, supernatural thriller Hemlock Grove. That’s more than a little unfair to the Eli Roth-produced series; though it certainly can’t match the dramatic heights of its network competitors, there’s a campy fun inherent in the series’ over-the-top gore and sexuality. Luckily for fans of the show, Netflix has opted to bring it back for another ten episodes, and today, the network revealed the premiere date for Hemlock Grove‘s second season.
Fans of Hemlock Grove will be able to sink their teeth into all ten episodes at 12:01 a.m. (PT) on July 11th. In an official statement, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, “Season two of Hemlock Grove is a hot mix of passion, intrigue and supernatural thrills that come together in mysterious and riveting ways.” He added that, “The intensity and suspense take things to a whole new level and open doors to a brand new chapter that our members are going to love.”
Roth, known for the Hostel series, added, “I cannot wait for fans to see what’s in store for Season 2 — it is going to blow away all expectations… Netflix has been an incredible partner, and whenever we wanted to take the story in a dangerous direction, they encouraged us to go even further – into a scarier, darker, and sexier place. We guarantee you won’t see anything like this anywhere else on television.”
Hemlock Grove focuses on the supernatural happenings in a small Pennsylvania community after the grisly murder of a young woman. Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, Penelope Mitchell, Freya Tingley and Dougray Scott star. The disturbing, bloody finale to season 1 certainly left a lot of questions unanswered, so I’m interested to see where Hemlock Grove will go next. Thankfully, due to Netflix’s focus on targeting niche markets, I’ll get to find out.
