Ncuti Gatwa is getting ready to inherit the sonic screwdriver and the unending sass of the titular character on Doctor Who, and according to what he’s just told fans, he’s going to be sticking around for a little while.
With the BBC so promptly announcing Gatwa as the next incarnation of the Doctor, we knew that David Tennant’s return to the TARDIS in the upcoming 60th-anniversary special would be short-lived. It’s still unclear where and how Gatwa is going to take over from the resurgent Tennant, but we do know that the Sex Education star is definitely going to be our next Doctor.
More importantly, it seems that Gatwa has impressed Russell T. Davies and the powers that be so much that he’ll be staying for more than one season. In a recent chat with Rolling Stone (per Collider), he revealed that he’s shooting his second season as the Fifteenth Doctor next year.
“[Theatre] kept me warm and it held me all night, even if I was broke,” He said. “But I’m planning on getting back to it next year, after I finish season two of Doctor Who.”
This means, at the very least, we’re going to get two seasons of Ncuti Gatwa spearheading Doctor Who as its ambassador. Not that it’s surprising — mind you — considering the fact that since the show’s reboot, the only incarnation to pass on the mantle after only one season has been Christopher Eccleston’s 9th Doctor.
Of course, for the time being, we have three episodes of utter Tennant awesomeness to look forward to this November, so stay tuned for more updates about the highly-anticipated 60th anniversary.
