President Obama will visit The Daily Show, and the world may never be the same.
Well, maybe it is not quite that drastic, but it is historic, as Obama will be the first sitting President to appear on the popular show.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told The New York Times, “The President hasn’t been shy about going to the places where people are getting their information and trying to make his case. And I think that’s what he’ll do on the show.”
As usual, there are many in favor of this Executive Decision to chat it up with Jon Stewart, and obviously, there are many against it. With elections coming up in early November, Republicans are complaining about the timing of the President’s appearance.
If that’s not enough, Joshua Greenman, a columnist for The New York Daily News said Obama’s “dumb” appearance on The Daily Show is diminishing the presidential brand. Greenman cited other “trivial media appearances,” from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to making college basketball tournament picks on ESPN. Geez.
“All that’s left, apparently, is to be a guest voice on The Simpsons, though I’m sure that’s in the offing,” Greenman wrote.
But one thing is for sure, a growing majority of America’s youth tends to garner political information from shows such as “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report.” And with the website AskMen.com dubbing Stewart “the nation’s most influential man”, Obama, I believe, should appear on this show.
Though I have only watched the show sparingly, I hold out hope that Stewart will ask at least a few tough questions for the President, and give us a few laughs as well.
The show will tape at 5:30 p.m. today, and air tonight on the Comedy Channel. This should be interesting. What do you guys think?
